Sweden Anthem
The capital and largest city of Sweden, in the eastern part of the country on the Baltic Sea. Founded in the mid-13th century, it grew as a trade center allied with the Hanseatic League. Stockholm was the leading city of the kingdom of Sweden after 1523 but did not become the official capital until 1634. The Nobel Institute is here. Population, 653,450+. A country of northern Europe on the eastern Scandinavian Peninsula. By the 17th century it was a major European power, controlling most of the Baltic coast. Sweden lost much of its territory in the Great Northern War (1700-1721) and acknowledged Norway's independence in 1905. Stockholm is the capital and the largest city. Population, 8,342,620+. |
